Carrapateira to Vila do Bispo Walk on the Fishermen’s Trail

The walk from Carrapateira to Vila do Bispo is one of the classic stages of the Fishermen’s Trail. Rated as one of the most beautiful coastal hiking routes in the world, the Fishermen’s trail runs along Portugal’s wild southwest coast from Porto Covo to Lagos. This stage is a brilliant mix: part dramatic coastline, part quiet countryside. One minute you’re staring down at crashing waves and jagged cliffs, the next you’re striding through open fields dotted with flowers in spring.

There are so many amazing hikes in the Algarve. This is a route that keeps things interesting from start to finish and perfectly shows off the raw beauty of the Algarve beyond the beaches and resorts.

How long is the route?

The distance from Carrapateira to Vila do Bispo is 15 km (9 miles). It’s not especially long, but don’t let the numbers fool you – this is not a lazy coastal stroll.

Start and Endpoint of the trail

The trail begins at the familiar blue and green Fishermen’s Trail markings on a pole outside the Pipe Spot Surf Shop (location pin) in Carrapateira.

The walk finishes in Vila do Bispo, close to the ALDI/LIDL supermarkets. From here, you can continue on to Sagres and keep following the Fishermen’s Trail as part of the wider Rota Vicentina network.

Difficulty of the Walk

It is not a very long day, but is still a challenging walk due to several steep ascents and descents. In summer and autumn the wind can be relentless, blasting you with sand and dust.

The hardest section is going up and down a steep hill roughly in the middle of the route, around Praia da Pena Furada. In this area the trail follows a narrow path with some steep sections.

Walking Direction

You can walk from Carrapateira to Vila do Bispo or the other way around. Many hikers prefer going south to north, hoping to have the wind at their back.

When I walked it, the wind was offshore, so the direction didn’t make a huge difference. Conditions change daily, so there’s no guaranteed “easy” option – just check the forecast and go with what feels right.

Route Markings

The route is generally easy to follow. The coastal sections are marked with blue and green stripes painted on wooden posts and rocks. Once the trail turns inland for the final kilometers, the markings switch to yellow and red stripes.

Scenery Walking from Carrapateira to Vila do Bispo

If you walk from north to south, the first 8 km hug the coastline, offering constant views from high cliffs down to hidden beaches and the Atlantic Ocean stretching to the horizon.

The final 7 km head inland through open fields and farmland. In spring, this section is surprisingly beautiful, with carpets of wildflowers and fresh green landscapes.

• Amado Beach – a long, sandy surf beach about 2.5 km from Carrapateira, with board rentals and cafés.
• Praia da Pena Furada, surrounded by majestic cliffs and unique rock formations, this little hidden beach near Vila do Bispo is a fantastic isolated stop. 
• Several small, hidden beaches along the way.
• Jaw-dropping cliff-top views over the Atlantic.
• Wildflower-filled fields in spring.

Best Time for Walking

The coastal routes in the Algarve can be hiked throughout the year, but spring is hands down our favorite season. From mid-April to the end of May, the landscape is at its best, covered in wildflowers, with comfortable temperatures around 20–25°C and fewer people on the trail.

July, August, and early September are very hot and busy. If you walk in summer, start early in the morning and bring plenty of water.

Late September and October are also good months for hiking, though the scenery is drier and dustier after the long summer.

Between November and March, conditions can be hit or miss. You might get perfect sunny hiking weather – or strong winds and heavy rain. Flexibility is key in the off-season.

How to get to Carrapateira / Vila do Bispo?

You can reach Carrapateira by direct bus from Lisbon.

Lisbon (Sete Rios station) to Carrapteira – Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays

From Lagos to Carrapateira, you’ll need two buses: Lagos to Vila do Bispo, then Vila do Bispo to Carrapateira.

Vila do Bispo is easier to reach than Carrapateira, with direct buses from both Lisbon and Lagos. There are several daily services from Lisbon.

You can get from Vila do Bispo to Carrapateira by taking a Uber/taxi or local bus.

• 0–1.7 km (0–1 mi) – Leaving Carrapateira on a gravel road heading towards the coast.
• 1.7 km (1 mi) – Restaurant Sítio do Forno.
• 1.7–2.7 km (1–1.6 mi) – Quiet tar road along the coast with very little traffic.
• 2.5 km (1.5 mi) – Amado Beach with cafés, toilets, and parking. Last chance for food and water before Vila do Bispo.
• 2.7–3.6 km (1.6–2.2 mi) – Coastal footpath.
• 3.6–4 km (2.2–2.4 mi) – Walking on sand.
• 4 km (2.4 mi) – Short but steep climb.
• 4–5 km (2.4–3.1 mi) – Footpath walking.
• 4.8 km (3.6 mi) – Small beach.
• 5–7 km (3.1–4.3 mi) – Gravel road.
• 7–8 km (4.3–5 mi) – Narrow footpath, sometimes close to the cliff edge.
• 7.4–8 km (4.5–5 mi) – Praia da Pena Furada: a steep descent to the beach followed by a long, steep climb back up.
