The Proteas have made an exciting start to their T20 World Cup campaign, most recently easing to an impressive win over New Zealand.
For some reason, thoughts of South Africans always move to public holidays if sporting teams excel on the world stage.
Will South Africa get a new Public Holiday if the Proteas win the World Cup?
No, don’t be a silly goose. Why would they? If we add another public holiday to the schedule, why stop there? Why not just add another week of holidays? That way, we can properly obliterate an economy that’s already on its knees. Jokes aside, let’s wait a while before we jinx the Proteas, but they’re looking good after a swashbuckling seven-wicket victory over a talented New Zealand side. The Black Caps started well, but the Proteas attack stifled them into setting a relatively paltry 175/7 on a good batting wicket.
South Africa chased the runs down 17 balls to spare after a devastating opening power play that saw them sitting at 83/1 after six overs. Skipper Aiden Markram starred with the bat, scoring 86* off 44 balls. There should be some rotation in their final group game against the UAE; fast bowler Anrich Nortje could feature.

The taste of silverware is overdue in the limited-overs format
The Proteas ended a 26-year trophy drought when they beat Australia in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s in 2025. Aside from giving them a much-needed shot in the arm and silverware for the cabinet, it also silenced a lot of the haters who have given them the ‘chokers’ tag after several failures in big tournaments.
Can our Proteas go all the way and win the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka? If they do, is another public holiday loading?
