A selection of recent work by artist Emma Steinkraus. Based in Lexington, Virginia, Steinkraus draws inspiration from art history—mining it as a living archive primed for excavation and transformation. Her paintings create a visual dialogue between past and present, responding to sources ranging from the Northern Renaissance and Pre-Raphaelites to contemporary painters like Haley Josephs and Njideka Akunyili Crosby. While history clearly carries a strong thematic presence throughout, Steinkraus’s work also examines gender and the more-than-human world with the same technical rigour and dreamy colour palette.
Emma Steinkraus is currently taking part in the group exhibition, “Pastime”, at Plato gallery in New York which runs until August 25th.
