Earlier this year, well-known former club cricketer Tristan Perez was released on bail, having previously been remanded to Pollsmoor Prison for allegedly murdering girlfriend, Elana Brooke, in Heathfield, Cape Town, on 23 March.
At the time, the family and representatives of Brooke had expressed their outrage over his release on R5 000 bail.
“This is not only a murder, it’s a gender-based violence murder, it’s femicide and that is even more worrying that someone like that is let out on bail and is free to walk until a trial has been set,” Brooke’s ex-husband and family spokesperson, David, stated at the time.
“We are very upset as a family, but we will deal with it. He will get his day in court and justice will be served for our beautiful Elana.”
That day in court is set to arrive this Friday, 7 August, when Perez returns to the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court.
He last appeared briefly in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on 2 June, but the case was postponed to allow the State further time to complete its investigation.
Club cricketer Tristan Perez must answer to murder charges
Back in March, police apprehended Perez after suspecting his involvement in the murder of Brooke after what was believed to be a heated argument.
According to reports, police were granted permission to check Perez’s phone, where they found a recording of an escalating argument, and suspicions that it ended with the tragic killing of Brooke.
She was 46.
Perez reportedly told officers that Brooke had died by suicide.
History on the club cricket scene
Perez has been a mainstay in Cape Town’s club cricket scene for several years, but Claremont Cricket Club had already abruptly ended his membership in mid-February due to “disciplinary matters arising from conduct deemed to be inconsistent with the ethos, values and spirit of the club.”
According to the Club Cricket website, just before his arrest, Perez had just recently scored a record-breaking double century for Claremont Cricket Club’s second XI, smashing 237 runs off 113 balls.
