DC Review: Arun Matheswaran’s Stylish Devdas Reimagining Favours Style Over Emotion

Arun Matheswaran has never been a filmmaker who believes less is more. His films thrive on violence, striking imagery, and characters who wear their scars on the outside as much as within. DC fits comfortably into that mould. Reimagining Devdas as a gritty outlaw thriller, the film delivers the visual intensity and action you expect from the director. Where it falls short is in giving that spectacle the emotional depth needed to match its visual ambition.

Das (Lokesh Kanagaraj) is a scarred outlaw leading a close-knit group of rebels surviving on the fringes of society. Raised in the shadows after a personal tragedy, he and his crew target corrupt figures of authority, earning the wrath of law enforcement in the process. Forced into hiding after a violent confrontation, Das briefly reconnects with his past through Parvathy (Sanjana Krishnamoorthy). But it is his encounter with Chandra (Wamiqa Gabbi), a spirited young woman carrying wounds of her own, that changes the course of his life. Their relationship soon spirals into a violent tale of love, revenge, and mutual self-destruction.

Rather than recreating the Devdas audiences already know, Arun Matheswaran uses it as a starting point. He strips away much of the familiar setting and reshapes the story into an outlaw drama that is unmistakably his own. Even when the narrative settles into familiar genre beats, his command over action staging keeps the film engaging.

Lokesh Kanagaraj never tries to play Das like a conventional action hero. Instead of chasing swagger, he leans into the character’s quiet intensity, allowing the physicality of the role to do much of the talking. The action sequences are where he leaves the strongest impression. The fights are raw, exhausting, and grounded, and Lokesh’s physical commitment makes every confrontation feel believable. In the quieter moments, he captures Das’ grief and cynicism without resorting to melodrama. His limitations become more visible during the emotionally demanding stretches, where his delivery occasionally feels monochromatic. Even so, he carries the role with enough conviction to make his debut feel more than a one-off experiment.

If Lokesh provides the film with its stillness, Wamiqa Gabbi gives it its spark. Chandra enters the story midway through and immediately changes its energy. Wamiqa plays her with infectious unpredictability, bringing both vulnerability and recklessness to a character who could easily have been reduced to a genre stereotype. Her chemistry with Lokesh becomes one of the film’s biggest strengths, and she matches him comfortably during the action while also giving the story much of its emotional spark. Just when the screenplay begins settling into familiar territory, her performance gives the film the lift it needs.

Sanjana Krishnamoorthy makes a strong impression despite her limited screen time, grounding Parvathy with enough sincerity to make her absence felt as the narrative shifts gears.

Behind the camera, Arun Matheswaran delivers his visual flair in full force. Cinematographer Mukesh G crafts a shadow-drenched world, using low-light photography and high-contrast framing to give every hideout and alleyway a distinct atmosphere. Anirudh Ravichander’s background score blends classical melodies with pulsating electronic synth to heighten the tension without overwhelming the drama. The pre-interval action sequence stands out as one of the film’s finest stretches, with choreography, editing, and music coming together to create a thrilling set-piece.

For all its technical accomplishment, however, DC never completely escapes its biggest weakness. Once the central conflict has been established, the screenplay begins repeating the same rhythm. The characters move from one confrontation to another with little variation, making the second half feel more cyclical than cumulative. The action rarely loses momentum. The drama does.

That also affects its reinterpretation of Devdas. Turning one of literature’s most enduring tragedies into an action thriller is an ambitious idea, but somewhere along the way the emotional core gets buried beneath the body count. The transition from the quieter tragedy of the Parvathy arc to the chaos surrounding Chandra feels abrupt, almost as though two different films have been stitched together. At times, the dialogue explains emotions the performances and visuals had already communicated, slowing the narrative just when it needs greater urgency.

Lokesh Kanagaraj makes a confident acting debut by playing to his strengths rather than chasing larger-than-life heroics. Wamiqa Gabbi, meanwhile, emerges as the film’s standout performer, bringing warmth and unpredictability to every scene she occupies. Arun Matheswaran’s visual confidence is never in doubt, but this reimagining never quite captures the emotional weight of the story that inspired it. As an action thriller, DC delivers. As a reinterpretation of Devdas, it doesn’t dig quite deep enough.
