Japan’s central government debt totaled a record ¥1.34 trillion at the end of June, up ¥2.84 trillion from three months prior, according to the Ministry of Finance.
The increase reflects the government’s continued reliance on borrowing to manage finances as spending continues to exceed tax revenues.
Based on an estimated population of 122.9 million as of July 1, the debt per capita is about ¥10.95 million.
Of the total debt, general government bonds accounted for ¥1.11 trillion, up ¥6.58 trillion, the ministry said Monday.
Borrowings fell by ¥3.78 trillion to ¥40.53 trillion, while short-term government securities increased by ¥2.09 trillion to ¥94.39 trillion.
The total central government debt at the end of fiscal 2026, reflecting the supplementary budget passed in June is expected to reach ¥1.49 trillion.
