Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa Set for UEFA Super Cup Clash in Salzburg

Share on FacebookShare on XShare on WhatsAppShare by email

Paris Saint-Germain can become only the second club in the modern era to retain the UEFA Super Cup when they face Aston Villa in Salzburg on Wednesday night.

The Champions League holders meet Unai Emery’s Europa League winners at Stadion Salzburg on 12 August. Kick-off is at 8pm BST, or 9pm local time.

PSG enter as European champions for the second successive season. Villa arrive after ending a 44-year wait for another major European trophy.

However, both managers have selection decisions to make.

PSG have several players short of full match fitness following the World Cup, while Villa have three confirmed absentees and doubts over several established first-team players.

The contrast could shape the final. Luis Enrique has the deeper collection of proven European winners, but Emery’s side have enjoyed a longer pre-season and could have an early physical advantage.

The Super Cup brings together the holders of UEFA’s two leading club competitions.

PSG secured their place by retaining the Champions League. Luis Enrique’s side drew 1-1 with Arsenal in Budapest before winning the final 4-3 on penalties.

Their victory followed the breakthrough European title they won in 2025 and means PSG now have the chance to begin another campaign with continental silverware.

Readers can find more coverage of European club football through World in Sport’s football section and its guide to Champions League prize money for 2026/27.

Villa followed a different path.

Emery guided them to their first Europa League title with a 3-0 victory over Freiburg in Istanbul on 20 May. Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers scored in the final.

It was Villa’s first European trophy since 1982/83.

They also have history in this competition. Villa beat Barcelona 3-1 on aggregate in their only previous Super Cup appearance after winning the European Cup in 1982.

This latest appearance comes as Villa prepare for another Champions League campaign under Emery.

PSG Team News

PSG have named a 24-player squad for Salzburg, with Luis Enrique able to include several players who only recently returned following the World Cup.

Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Fabián Ruiz, Achraf Hakimi, Lucas Hernández, Warren Zaïre-Emery and Bradley Barcola are all in the travelling group. However, UEFA listed each of them as a fitness doubt in its match preview.

That distinction is important. PSG have no confirmed injury absentees listed by UEFA, but Luis Enrique must decide how heavily he can rely on players who have had limited preparation.

Dembélé, Doué and Barcola only returned to training on Monday alongside Ruiz after their involvement at the World Cup.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia should be in a stronger position. Georgia did not qualify for the World Cup, allowing the winger to complete a more conventional pre-season with his club.

New signing Maghnes Akliouche is also included in PSG’s squad after arriving from Monaco.

Lucas Digne could immediately face his former club. The left-back completed a permanent move from Villa to Paris on 9 August and is among Luis Enrique’s options for the final.

PSG have played only two listed pre-season friendlies. They lost 3-0 at Mallorca before drawing 1-1 with Manchester United in Gothenburg on Saturday.

Their quality is clear. Their match sharpness is harder to judge.

Aston Villa Team News

Villa have more definite injury problems.

UEFA lists Leon Bailey as unavailable with a muscular injury. Johan Manzambi and Amadou Onana will also miss the final because of knee injuries.

Emery also has several players whose availability remains uncertain.

Alejandro Garnacho has a facial problem, while John McGinn is dealing with a knee issue. Ezri Konsa, Emiliano Martínez and Ollie Watkins are listed as fitness doubts.

The situation leaves Emery with decisions across almost every area of the side.

João Gomes could make his competitive Villa debut following his move from Wolves. Centre-back Modou Kéba Cissé is another new option after joining from LASK.

Garnacho could also debut if passed fit following his loan move from Chelsea.

Villa at least have more football behind them than PSG.

They began pre-season with a 5-0 victory at Walsall and also faced Porto and Real Sociedad before travelling to Asia. Their tour ended with a 2-1 defeat against Bayern Munich in Hong Kong on 7 August.

World in Sport recently examined Villa’s preparations alongside the other leading English clubs in its look at the Premier League contenders’ final pre-season tests.

What Could the Starting Line-Ups Look Like?

UEFA’s predicted PSG side has Matvey Safonov in goal behind Illia Zabarnyi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho and Nuno Mendes.

João Neves, Vitinha and Dro Fernández form the projected midfield, with Ibrahim Mbaye, Senny Mayulu and Kvaratskhelia in attack.

That selection reflects the uncertainty surrounding PSG’s late-returning World Cup players.

Dembélé, Doué, Hakimi and Ruiz would normally strengthen Luis Enrique’s options considerably. Their involvement could depend on the final training session and how much risk PSG are willing to take at the beginning of a long season.

UEFA projects Marco Bizot in goal for Villa, with Matty Cash, Victor Lindelöf, Pau Torres and Ian Maatsen in defence.

João Gomes and Boubacar Kamara could operate behind McGinn, Buendía and Garnacho, with Tammy Abraham leading the attack.

Those line-ups remain predictions rather than confirmed selections.

Kvaratskhelia Could Test Villa’s Right Side

One of Villa’s biggest problems could come down PSG’s left.

Kvaratskhelia enters the game with more uninterrupted preparation than several of his attacking team-mates. If Cash starts at right-back, Villa must decide how aggressively to move him forward.

Leaving space behind him would give Kvaratskhelia opportunities to attack directly.

Emery may therefore ask Villa’s right-sided midfielder to offer more defensive protection than usual. That could limit their own ability to break quickly.

The Midfield Could Decide Villa’s Chances

Villa’s injury problems make the centre of the pitch another important area.

Onana is unavailable, while Manzambi cannot feature. Tielemans’ summer departure has also changed the structure of Emery’s midfield.

Kamara could therefore carry significant responsibility alongside João Gomes.

PSG are difficult opponents when Vitinha and João Neves establish control. Both can receive possession under pressure and help Luis Enrique’s side dictate where the game is played.

Villa cannot simply retreat and defend their penalty area.

They caused PSG problems during their 2024/25 Champions League quarter-final by becoming more aggressive and playing forward when opportunities appeared.

PSG eventually won that tie 5-4 on aggregate, but Villa won the second leg 3-2 after threatening a remarkable comeback.

Emery has already pointed to that performance as evidence that his side can compete with Paris when they impose themselves rather than merely contain them.

His full pre-match interview is available through UEFA.

Can Villa Exploit Psg’s Limited Preparation?

This may be Villa’s clearest route into the contest.

PSG have superior depth in several positions, but many of their leading players have returned late following a demanding summer.

Villa have had more conventional preparation.

That does not guarantee greater sharpness. Emery’s team have also travelled extensively and ended their Asian schedule with defeat against Bayern.

However, Villa may benefit if they can make the game physically uncomfortable during the opening stages.

PSG will want possession. Villa should look for moments to press, win the ball in midfield and attack before Luis Enrique’s defensive structure settles.

The longer PSG control the tempo, the more difficult that task becomes.

Emery Faces Another Luis Enrique Final

There is also familiarity on the touchline.

Emery and Luis Enrique have competed against each other throughout their careers in Spain and Europe.

Emery has won the UEFA Europa League five times, including Villa’s triumph last season. Yet his previous three appearances in the Super Cup as a manager all ended in defeat.

Luis Enrique is attempting to win the competition for a third time as a coach after previous successes with Barcelona and PSG.

He described Villa as highly competitive ahead of the game. And has made clear that PSG view the trophy as an important part of their attempt to keep winning after successive Champions League titles.

His comments are available in UEFA’s Super Cup interview.

PSG vs Aston Villa Prediction

Villa have enough attacking quality to cause problems, particularly if Watkins, McGinn or Garnacho pass their fitness tests.

Their longer preparation should also help them compete from the opening whistle.

PSG still have the stronger range of options.

Kvaratskhelia is ready to start; Vitinha and João Neves give them control in midfield, and Luis Enrique could introduce Dembélé, Doué, or Barcola if he decides they are fit enough.

Villa’s absences in midfield could become increasingly important as the game develops.

The balance therefore favours PSG, although this should be closer than their respective European titles might suggest.

Prediction: Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Aston Villa.

If the match is level after 90 minutes, there will be no extra time. The Super Cup will go directly to a penalty shoot-out.

For Villa, the challenge is to make their greater preparation count before PSG find their rhythm. If Paris take control of midfield and settle into their possession game, their attacking depth should give the European champions the advantage.
