Shortly before, Gesa Krause had won the first European Championship title for Germany in the 3,000-metre steeplechase. On Thursday evening, the 34-year-old athlete from Trier beat second-placed Frenchwoman Alice Finot and her German teammate Olivia Gürth, who took bronze. Krause was able to celebrate her third European Championship title in this discipline, having already come first in Amsterdam in 2016 and in Berlin in 2018.
The titles won by Krause and Neugebauer are the first gold medals for the German athletics team at the European Championships in Birmingham. Steeplechase athlete Olivia Gürth and discus thrower Henrik Janssen also won bronze medals.
