Can you believe it’s been 10 years?
On Aug. 20, 2016, Canadian rock band the Tragically Hip played their final concert, at the K-Rock Centre in their hometown, Kingston, Ont. (And if you needed the passage of time underlined further, that venue is now known as Slush Puppie Place.)
The concert, aired on CBC, was a final goodbye to the band, who announced a 10-city, 15-show tour after lead singer Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.
In honour of the anniversary, CBC will rebroadcast the recording of the concert tonight.
The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration airs Canada-wide at 7 p.m. across the country on CBC-TV and CBC Gem (8 p.m. AT and 8:30 p.m. NT). We’ll be carrying the CBC Ottawa broadcast here in about an hour.The rebroadcast will begin with a short film by Gord Downie’s brother Mike called A Beautiful Thing, which includes behind-the-scenes tour footage and notable Canadians sharing what the Hip means to them.
We’ll bring you live coverage from Kingston tonight from CBC’s Gabrielle Huston. The city is capping a three-day celebration of the band with a public viewing of the concert.
This live page will also act as a second screen of the concert, sharing behind-the-scenes details from the night and explaining the meaning behind Downie’s Canadiana-laced lyrics, which helped make the band a national icon.
