Security authorities in Giza have arrested six individuals, including five students and a delivery worker, following the viral spread of a social media video depicting the violent abduction of a young woman in broad daylight.
Investigators tracked down the victim, who lives in the Al-Ahram area. She told police that a car stopped near her in the First Sheikh Zayed district, before one of the men pulled a knife, and the group forced her inside.
Inside the car, they physically attacked and harassed her and tried to sexually assault her. The woman fought back and broke the car’s windows. The attackers eventually pushed her out onto a street in the Second Sheikh Zayed area and stole her phone.
Police used the viral video to track down the car, which was missing its front license plate and had expired papers. Officers arrested the driver and five passengers, including five students and one delivery worker.
Three of the suspects have a criminal history involving robbery, drugs, and other crimes. Police also found powdered drugs in the car, along with the knife used in the attack and the victim’s stolen phone.
When questioned, the suspects confessed. They admitted they planned to take the girl to a quiet mountain area in Sheikh Zayed to sexually assault her.
The suspects are now facing legal action.
Sexual harassment and assault remain widespread issues in Egypt, with various studies, including landmark reports by UN Women and regional barometers, indicating that a vast majority of Egyptian women, sometimes exceeding 90 percent in urban or public spaces, have experienced some form of verbal or physical harassment or assault.
