Among the high-rise buildings of metropolitan Tokyo, parks and gardens offer quiet places of relaxation, their colors changing with each season. During September, cosmos and amaryllis flowers bloom beautifully, representing autumn.

The Hamarikyu Gardens, a designated national spot of scenic beauty, is a garden built by the Tokugawa shogunate back in the Edo period. Shiori Pond inside the park and two duck-hunting ponds are filled with seawater from Tokyo Bay.

Cosmos and Yellow Cosmos bloom beautifully in the flower garden called Ohanamachi near the Otemon Gate. All in all, over 300,000 individual blossoms. Yellow Cosmos starts to bloom in late July, while pink, white, and purple Cosmos show their beauty in September. The sight of the ocean of flowers in front of a scenery of skyscrapers is genuinely unique.

2. Showa Memorial Park: Gorgeous ocean of 5.5 million cosmos flowers

This public park was opened to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Emperor Showa’s reign. There are four distinctive places to see the Cosmos: Flower Hill, Flower Garden (East Field), Flower Garden (West Field), and Flower Garden (South Field).

The blooming period is rather long, lasting from mid-September to the beginning of November, offering a colorful variety of blossoms, with most of them on Flower Hill. In the center of an event called “Dwarf Sensation” are 4 million Cosmos flowers in full bloom, covering the hilly plains in an ocean of pink – an astonishing sight. The best time to experience the Cosmos is in mid-October.

Koganei Park has two fields filled with Cosmos flowers: the Children’s Field as well as the Tsutsujiyama Field. The area spans over 3,600 square meters, and the most popular sensation undoubtedly is the 20,000 Cosmos flowers of five different varieties. The best time to enjoy the colorful sight is from late September to mid-October. October is also when a Cosmos picking event is held for free, allowing visitors to take home their very own blossoming sensation.

Stroll along a relaxing walking path around a large pond, through artificial hills, and beside beautiful dry waterfalls in Kyu Shiba Rikyu Garden. It was built in the Edo period as the private garden of feudal lords.

While the garden does not feature a vast field full of Amaryllis, its charm lies in discovering the blooming flowers as colorful clusters in various small nooks and crannies along the pathway. The dark red blossoms, shining brightly among the green grass and trees, exude an extraordinary beauty, with a giant flower patch in front of the service center. The flowers are in full bloom every September.

This lush metropolitan park spreads out towards Tokyo Bay, a beautiful park overflowing with green built to connect water, nature, and humans. Starting with a 117-meter-high Ferris wheel, an aquarium, and a ward hotel, there are numerous facilities on the grounds of the park.

Beautiful clusters of Amaryllis flowers blossom all over the park, particularly on the lawn in front of the service center and near the bird-watching center. Especially the white dots of rare white Amaryllis make this park a fantastic sight. The flowers are in full bloom every September.

6. Jindai Botanical Gardens: 150-meter long river of amaryllis

This park was opened as an extension to The Jindai Botanical Gardens in 1985. Spring water from the botanical gardens flows to the east side of the park, where the wetlands lie, creating paddy fields and ponds, which are home to a huge variety of aquatic plants.

The best time to see the Amaryllis in bloom is mid-to-late September, when a flower carpet of around 150 meters in length spreads over the garden like a red river.
