Another flyover planned for FNB Stadium

A stunning pre-match flyover by Airlink ahead of the Springboks’ victory over the All Blacks at DHL Stadium this past weekend sparked a heated debate, and made global headlines.

Social media exploded over footage showing two Embraer E190 passenger jets – in Springbok and All Blacks colours – passing directly over the packed venue, with flight-tracking estimates suggesting the lead aircraft cleared the roof by just 12 to 14 meters.

In response to the viral backlash, Airlink issued a statement confirming the display was operated by six senior captains, thoroughly rehearsed, and strictly performed within safety limits approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

Airlink expected to perform another flyover at FNB Stadium this Saturday

The Springboks are set to play their final home Test of the year at the iconic FNB Stadium this weekend in what is sure to be another blockbuster battle against the All Blacks.

Airlink is an official sponsor of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, and it’s been confirmed that there is another flyover planned for this Saturday, as was the case for the first Test at Ellis Park and last Saturday in Cape Town.

Although somewhat unexpected, the viral reaction to the flyover at DHL Stadium was also of course an incredible bit of brand and marketing exposure.

On Sunday, Airlink released the following statement: “Airlink notes the concerns expressed in various social media and online forums regarding yesterday’s formation flyby over Cape Town’s DHL Stadium.

“The flight demanded careful planning and rehearsal, as it required navigating at low altitude, at around 150 knots. The South African Civil Aviation Authority and Air Traffic Navigation Services provided valuable guidance, approval and support to ensure a safe flyby.

“The two aircraft were flown by highly-experienced crew, with each comprised of three senior captains operating in the roles of commander, co-pilot and safety/technical officer.

“The flight data recorded by both aircraft confirms that the flights were performed within the SACAA’s approved and rehearsed safety altitude and speed limits for the flypast.”

No cause for concern

Meanwhile, aviation expert Wouter Botes has suggested it was a well-executed activation in Cape Town, and that “everybody must just calm down”.

“Personally, I think it was a good publicity stunt, but I wouldn’t do that,” he told East Coast Radio.

“I wouldn’t fly that low. But in retrospect, I think it went well, and I think they really did their planning before they did that. So, I don’t think the hype is really worth it. Everybody must just calm down.”
