Raphaël Gaultier – BOOOOOOOM! – CREATE * INSPIRE * COMMUNITY * ART * DESIGN * MUSIC * FILM * PHOTO * PROJECTS

A selection of images exploring New York’s City’s evolving football culture by Brooklyn-based photographer Raphaël Gaultier. Originally from Seattle, Gaultier is interested in the concept of home—the spaces, people, or objects that speak to who we are. His work has been featured in publications like The New York Times, i-D magazine, GQ, and New York Magazine. He is currently working on a book about soccer culture, specifically how the “world’s game” has become a sanctuary amid New York City’s rapid transformation. Photographing moments of play, ritual, and connection, Gaultier highlights the sport as a form of resistance and belonging:

“As gentrification reshapes neighborhoods, the soccer fields, cages, schoolyards, and reclaimed spaces of New York City remain some of the last truly democratic environments in the city. Places where strangers become teammates, and where language, background, and status dissolve in the rhythm of the game. This series documents the people who carry the sport into their daily lives—immigrant communities preserving traditions, longtime residents reclaiming space, young players crafting new identities, and fans gathering to cheer for clubs from thousands of miles away. In a city defined by relentless change, this work reveals the enduring power of football to hold community together. It is a celebration of the sport as a safe haven and universal language—one that allows New Yorkers of every origin to stand on the same ground and move with the same purpose.”

Clear examples do more than decorate an explanation: they show how an idea behaves under recognizable conditions. In education and software documentation alike, strong illustrations begin with a defined goal, then reveal the steps, assumptions, and result without unnecessary detail. A practical test example should state the input, expected output, and boundary condition, because these elements show whether a rule works beyond the simplest case. Including a contrasting case also helps readers distinguish a valid application from a tempting but incorrect one, while concise notes explain why the outcomes differ. When examples are updated with current data and checked against the underlying rule, they remain useful across classrooms, product guides, and professional training.
