A young humpback whale was rescued on August 23 after getting caught in shark-control netting off the coast of Currumbin, Queensland, was rescued by crews from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) and Sea World. In a news release, Village Roadshow Theme Parks, the company that owns and operates Sea World on Queensland’s Gold Coast, said the rescuers used specialized cutting equipment to remove netting entangled around the whale’s face and pectoral fin. The whale was freed after a two-hour operation and swam away, though was noted to be in poor health due to pre-existing illness that included a large abscess on its back, Village Roadshow said.
