The moment you went to snap a photo at a Shinjuku crossing, your phone slipped from your hand and the screen cracked… You tripped on Kyoto’s stone-paved streets and your battery suddenly gave out… Phone trouble during a trip to Japan is a real travel emergency that can rob you of the memories of your trip itself.
E-boarding passes, hotel booking confirmations, translation apps, and above all, your travel photos. Because everything lives on your phone, knowing where you can get it fixed “right away, without losing your data, and without language worries” can make a huge difference to the rest of your trip.
In this article, we take a close look at how international visitors can make the most of Smahospital, a repair provider registered with Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications that runs about 100 shops nationwide and has repaired more than 1.5 million devices. We also explain how to use the LIVE JAPAN reader-exclusive “Every Spin Wins! Up to 10,000 Yen Off Coupon.”
Exclusive for LIVE JAPAN Readers! Every Spin Wins – Up to 10,000 Yen Off Coupon
Here’s a money-saving tip to know before you read on. As a special perk just for readers of this article, you can spin a coupon roulette where every spin wins, with up to 10,000 yen off repair fees. Using it is easy: just show the coupon screen on your phone at check-in. Full terms and conditions are explained later in the article, so first, let’s look at how to choose a shop and how the repair process works.

1. Why a Cracked Phone Screen Is a Big Deal When Traveling in Japan
For travelers visiting Japan from overseas, a smartphone is much more than just a way to stay in touch.
- Cashless payments such as IC transit cards and Mobile Suica
- E-tickets for the shinkansen and flights
- Language support such as Google Translate and point-and-speak apps
- Navigation with map apps
- Travel photos and videos to share with family and friends
If a cracked screen, a dead battery, or water damage leaves your phone unusable, you temporarily lose all of these at once, and your travel plans themselves can fall apart. On top of that, travelers face a “triple worry”: not being able to read Japanese, not knowing the area, and having only a limited number of days in the country. That makes phone trouble far more serious for visitors than it is for locals.
2. Official Repair Stores vs. Smahospital: What’s the Difference?
Repairs at official manufacturer stores such as the Apple Store offer peace of mind in terms of quality, but in reality they can be hard for travelers to use.
Official Manufacturer Store vs. Smahospital
Smahospital’s big strength is that it meets the needs of travelers on a tight schedule who want their phone “fixed today” and “without losing their photos.”
3. 4 Reasons Travelers Choose Smahospital
① Same-day repairs with your data intact – no reset needed
Photos from your trip, e-tickets, social media contacts… Smahospital replaces only the broken parts, so your phone does not need to be reset. There’s no need to back up first, and your precious travel memories stay just as they are – the biggest relief of all for visitors to Japan.
② As fast as 15 minutes, and walk-ins are always welcome
Screen and battery replacements can be completed in as little as 15 to 45 minutes. To fit tight travel schedules, shops also accept walk-ins with no reservation. While you wait, you can enjoy sightseeing or shopping in the surrounding area.
③ Unbeatable access from major terminal stations
With shops near the stations and inside the shopping centers that visitors to Japan are sure to pass through – Shinjuku, Otemachi, Umeda in Osaka, Tennoji, Kawaramachi in Kyoto, in front of Kyoto Station, in front of Nagoya Station, Fukuoka, Sannomiya in Kobe and more – you can easily drop in between stops. The convenient locations are another big plus.
④ Foreign-language support and cashless payments take the worry out of language and payment
Staff use translation apps and point-and-speak tools to carefully explain prices and repair details. Besides cash in Japanese yen, a wide range of payment methods are accepted, including major credit cards such as VISA, Mastercard, AMEX and JCB, e-money, and QR code payments, so you’re covered even without yen on hand. And because there are shops all over Japan, if any problem comes up after you’ve moved on to another city, you can get help at a shop there.
