A selection of street photography by New York City-based artist Patrick DeWitt. DeWitt spends much of his free time walking. Sometimes with a destination, often without, and always with a camera. Working with a wide-angle lens, he moves between getting close and keeping his distance, exaggerating the space between himself and the people and things he encounters along the way. The photographs are shaped as much by where he ends up as by who and what he finds there. These images are part of an ongoing series begun in 2021:
“Psychologists call it the frequency illusion but it can also be thought of as your feelings stealing your attention. These photographs were made candidly and collaboratively in New York City between 2021 and 2025, during a pronounced period of personal loss and uncertainty. They blend the traditions and techniques of street and diaristic photography to bring attention to the phenomenon of falling for a feeling, and not finding anything else.”
Patrick DeWitt participated in our 2026 Book Award open call and made our shortlist.
