LOS ANGELES (AP) — Johnny Juzang scored 25 points and No. 2 UCLA overcame a 10-point, second-half deficit before taking control in overtime to beat fourth-ranked Villanova 86-77. Jules Bernard banked in a jumper that tied it at 67-all with 30 seconds to go to force overtime, when cheering, chanting fans in Pauley Pavilion remained on their feet until the final buzzer. Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Bruins, who are 2-0. Villanova (1-1) was led by Jermaine Samuels with 20 points and Collin Gillespie added 18 points.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — PJ Pipes hit four 3-pointers and finished with 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting, Jalen Williams scored 19 points and Santa Clara cruised to a 88-72 win over Stanford. The Broncos missed their first three shots as Stanford (1-1) took a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes but Santa Clara hit 11 of its next 12 from the field during a 21-0 run — including eight points by Pipes and seven by Josip Vrankic — to take the lead for good. Prized-recruit Harrison Ingraham hit three 3-pointers and scored 19 points for Stanford and 7-foot-1 freshman Maxime Raynaud added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Freshman Talia von Oelhoffen had 19 points and five steals and sophomore Taylor Jones and freshman AJ Marotte scored 15 apiece as No. 14 Oregon State opened its season with an 82-52 victory over Loyola Marymount in nonconference play. The Beavers took control in the second quarter, using a 12-2 run to take a 30-17 lead with 4:51 left before halftime. Von Oelhoffen scored the first five points in the run and Jones scored the last five. Oregon State stretched its lead to 44-30 at halftime, blocking eight shots along the way. The Beavers shot 51.5% (17 of 33) in the first 20 minutes and got even hotter in the second half — finishing at 53.1% (34 of 64).
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Cate Reese scored 21 points, Bendu Yeaney scored Arizona’s last five points of overtime, and the 22nd-ranked Wildcats outlasted No. 6 Louisville 61-59. The teams faced each other at the Mammoth Sports Construction Invitational in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Yeaney finished with 12 points. She put Arizona ahead midway through overtime with her only 3-pointer of the game. After Louisville tied it with a free throw, Yeaney sank a jumper with 1:45 left and neither team scored again. Hailey Van Lith led the Cardinals with 19 points, and her two free throws with 13 seconds to play tied it at 54-54.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Christian Koloko had 18 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks, Azuolis Tubelis scored 20 points with nine rebounds and Arizona’s formidable frontcourt duo led the Wildcats to a 104-50 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley. Koloko, a 7-foot-1 junior, played 19 minutes and surpassed his career highs for both points and rebounds while tying his career best by blocking five shots for the second straight game. Justin Kier and Bennedict Mathurin each scored 13 points with Oumar Ballo, a 7-foot transfer from Gonzaga, finishing with 12 for the Wildcats. Ricky Nelson scored 14 points and Justin Johnson and Mike Adewunmi added 10 each for the Vaqueros.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Eric Williams Jr. had 19 points and five rebounds as No. 13 Oregon defeated SMU 86-63 Friday night. Will Richardson and Jacob Young each scored 18 points as the Ducks (2-0) shot 51.6% from the field, including 9 for 20 on 3-pointers. Rivaldo Soares had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds, Quincy Guerrier had nine points and six rebounds and Franck Kepnang had seven points and six rebounds. Emmanuel Bandoumel scored 14 points to pace the Mustangs (1-1), who shot 37.7% from the field.
PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Tyrell Roberts scored 17 points and Washington State defeated Seattle 79-61 for the Cougars’ 20th straight nonconference victory. Roberts hit four 3-pointers and was joined in double-figure scoring by Dishon Jackson and Noah Williams with 13 points each and Mouhamed Gueye with 10. The Redhawks were led by Nate Robinson who made four 3-pointers and scored 17 points. Riley Grigsby added 12 points. Seattle played its second game since Jim Hayford announced his resignation as head coach on Thursday. Hayford had been on paid administrative leave since last Friday following a published report that he had used a racial slur during a scrimmage.
UNDATED (AP) — American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco says he will oppose a College Football Playoff expansion model gives automatic access only to Power Five conference champions. The CFP management committee has been meeting to discuss growing the playoff from its current four-team field. A 12-team model was proposed in the summer that included guaranteed spots for six of 10 FBS conference champions and six at-large selections. Arescos ays an alternative model was discussed last week that provided automatic access only to the champions of ACC, SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12 and only the highest-ranked champion from the so-called Group of Five conferences.
