Lady Gaga turned heads at the 2010 MTV VMAs when she rocked up in a meat dress.
In an interview with British Vogue in November 2021, Gaga revealed a little-known detail about how the iconic look came about.
“The meat dress was actually Val Garland’s idea, Val Garland, the make-up artist,” Gaga recalled.
“She’d shared a story with me where she had gone to a party wearing sausages… and I thought this was quite funny.
“I said, ‘Well that’s a great way to make sure everybody leaves you alone at a party.'”
Gaga reveals that she decided with her design team that they would make a statement at the VMAs, to protest the US military’s attempt to repeal the Clinton government’s 1993 “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy at the time.
The original policy directed that military applicants were not to be asked about their sexual orientation.
The final dress was designed by Argentinian designer Franc Fernández, and saw one of Gaga’s vegan stylists help to sew the garment together.
In the interview, Gaga is adamant that she is not simply wearing meat.
“There’s a corset under this, but the corset was sewn to the meat. So, this is actually a garment, they didn’t just drape meat over me.”
She adds: “It smelled like meat. It was thrilling to wear.”
