AP-US-KENOSHA-PROTEST-SHOOTINGS

After final word from attorneys, Rittenhouse jury takes over

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — Attorneys are set to make closing arguments at Kyle Rittenhouse’s trial in the shootings of three men during street unrest in Wisconsin. The arguments Monday will be the last word of some two weeks of courtroom drama before a jury begins deliberating in a case that underscored Americans’ bitter divisions on issues of guns, protests and policing. Rittenhouse, who was 17 at the time, faces charges ranging from an intentional homicide charge that could mean life in prison to an underage weapons charge that could mean just a few months in jail. Experts say prosecutors struggled to poke holes in Rittenhouse’s claims of self-defense. They asked a judge to allow the jury to consider several lesser charges in addition to those originally brought.

In gun debate, Rittenhouse verdict unlikely to be last word

A jury will soon deliberate whether Kyle Rittenhouse is guilty of charges, including murder, for shooting three people in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Outside the courtroom, a debate already has played out across the country around the use of guns, particularly at protests over racial injustice and pandemic-related restrictions. Some see Rittenhouse as a patriot, defending an American city from destruction when police were unwilling or too overwhelmed to do so. Others see an irresponsible kid in over his head, enamored with brandishing a firearm, or someone looking for trouble or people to shoot. On the streets of Kenosha that night, for a while anyway, he was just another person with a gun.

STRIP CLUB SHOOTING

Gunfire reported outside beleaguered Wisconsin strip club

BRISTOL, Wis. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a report of gunfire outside a controversial Bristol strip club that police believe left at least one person injured. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office responded to Club Bristol at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday on reports of people exchanging gunfire in the parking lot. Preliminary reports show there was a large gathering of people outside the bar before shots erupted and many vehicles left the area before law enforcement arrived. Numerous shell casings were found in the lot. Authorities suspect that at least one person was hurt, but no further details were released. The club was the site of three shootings in one week in March, which led the bar to voluntarily shut down after the Bristol town board threatened to pull its licenses.

STOLEN DOG RETURNED

Dog stolen from Wisconsin home returned, suspect arrested

MAZOMANIE, Wis. (AP) — Authorities say a woman suspected of stealing a dog from a Mazomanie residence has been arrested and the canine is back home. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office says a 13-year-old German shorthaired pointer named Jackson was reported missing Thursday afternoon. There were no signs of forced entry and nothing else was missing from the home. A deputy received a call Saturday from someone claiming to have Jackson. The deputy went to the caller’s residence early Sunday morning and found the dog. The Wisconsin State Journal reports that the woman was arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft of a domestic animal.

AP-US-KENOSHA-PROTEST-SHOOTINGS-EXPLAINER-RITTENHOUSE-DEFENSE-CASE

EXPLAINER: Did Rittenhouse lawyers do enough to prevail?

KENOSHA, Wisconsin (AP) — When Kyle Rittenhouse took the stand to testify about his actions the night he shot three men on the streets of Kenosha — sobbing and seemingly unable to continue as he approached the critical moment where he shot the first man — it was one of the most compelling moments in his two-week murder trial. It might have been the most effective part of his three-day defense, too, potentially swaying any jurors inclined toward sympathy for the 18-year-old who has claimed self-defense in the shootings that left two of the men dead. Rittenhouse didn’t wilt in roughly six hours on the stand as prosecutors worked to portray him as at fault for the violence that night.

FATAL CRASH-TEENAGERS

Milwaukee crash kills one teen, hospitalizes another

MILWAUKEE (AP) — One Milwaukee teenager is dead and another is hospitalized in critical condition after a single-car crash. The Milwaukee Police Department reported two people were ejected from a vehicle after the driver recklessly struck a tree late Friday. A 16-year-old teen died at the scene of the crash. A 13-year-old was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The police are looking for two other people involved in the crash.

MISSING WOMAN-SEARCH

Minnesota officials ask hunters for signs of missing woman

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Authorities in Minnesota and Wisconsin are requesting help from hunters in a search for a missing woman. Local officials have been searching for the woman, Ashley Miller-Carlson, since late September when her car was found partially submerged in a lake in Minnesota’s Pine County. Investigators are requesting hunters to be on the lookout for any sign of the woman, KFGO-AM reported.

KENOSHA PROTEST-SHOOTINGS

Jury to get to weigh some lesser charges in Rittenhouse case

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — The jury that will decide Kyle Rittenhouse’s fate will be allowed to consider some lesser charges if they opt to acquit him on some of the original counts prosecutors brought. After fierce debate between prosecutors and attorneys for the 18-year-old Illinois man on Friday without jurors present, Judge Bruce Schroeder said he would issue final rulings on Saturday about which lesser charges the jury could consider. But he also made some findings from the bench and indicated how he is inclined to rule on others. Legal observers say both sides could claim partial victory over the hearing before the case goes to a jury next week.
