Chelsea have signed defender, Wesley Fofana in a £75m transfer from Leicester City.
Fofana’s move came after Chelsea eventually reached an agreed transfer fee with Leicester following rejection of three previous bids for the 21 year-old centre-back, who has spent recent days training with the Foxes’ Under-21s squad following his failure to attend a training session.
Chelsea will pay an initial transfer fee of £70.4m with add-ons set to take the total fee to around £75m, making him the second most expensive defender behind Manchester United’s Harry Maguire who joined the Red Devils from Leicester in August 2019 for around £80m.
Fofana has signed a seven-year contract until June 2029.
Speaking about his decision to join Chelsea, Fofana commented: “The two last days have been really big days for me and I’m very happy. I trained this morning with the team and it’s a dream for me. I’m very excited to start playing games for the fans and the club.
“I’m here to win trophies – the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, everything. I came here to win and the club is built to win trophies so I’m here to continue that.”
Chelsea co-owner and Chairman, Todd Boehly added: “Wesley is a hugely promising defender who has already proven his quality in the Premier League at a young age.
“We are delighted we were able to bring one of Europe’s most exciting talents to Chelsea and further strengthen that area of our squad, both for this season and many more to come.”
Fofana began his career at Saint-Etienne where he graduated through their youth academy to score two goals in 30 senior appearances, before he joined Leicester in October 2020 where he scored once in 52 appearances.
The Marseille-born 21 year-old represents France in international football at Under-21 level.
Fofana will be eligible to make his debut for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 3 September, as the Blues host West Ham in a cross-London derby clash in a 3pm BST kick-off.
