South African police have recorded a sharp increase in violent crime in the past three months, recording over 6100 murders and homicides from July to September, the latest crime statistics show.
This is an increase of 20.7 per cent compared to the same period last year, they said.
Most recently, 9556 rapes were reported from July to September, an increase of 7.1 per cent.
The police did not say what the estimated number of unreported offences was.
The latest crime data shows once again that South Africa is a violent country, Police Minister Bheki Cele was quoted as saying by South African media on Saturday.
The level of sexual violence was a disgrace and deeply disturbing, the minister said.
