Dressed in tiny traditional costumes and with tiny backpacks on their backs, about 300 dogs of all sizes competed Sunday in a dog race in Mexico City.
In the “Perritos en fuga” race, which means “dogs on the move,” pet owners and their four-legged friends braved the morning cold to honor the city’s canine community.
After being numbered at the starting line, the dogs headed off in all directions, some of them battling their rivals, to the sounds of traditional Mexican music.
“Dog culture is very lacking and this helps to promote it,” 29-year-old Ricardo Cabrera, who took part in the competition with his dog, told AFP. “It’s very nice because sometimes there are no other public activities with the pets other than going to the park.”
There was no winner in the 2.5 km race, but all participants received gifts such as dog food bowls.
“The event makes the dog part of the family,” veterinarian Monica Aguilar, 45, told AFP. “It’s very important because it prevents abandonment – you won’t abandon your family.”
