Once Chelsea confirm the Romeo Lavia signing they will have assembled on of the best midfields in world football in the space of two transfer windows.
For years this area of the pitch has been neglected by the club. Chelsea have not had a true defensive midfielder since Nemanja Matic, and he left our club in 2017.
Since then we have had some decent (some very good) midfielders, but our midfield on the whole has been nowhere near good enough, un-balanced, and lacking the correct profiles to compete in the Premier League.
If you want to win things regularly and be a constant force in world football, you need to make sure that you have a perfect engine of the team, which is the midfield. And that starts at the base of it, with a defensive midfielder.
Chelsea now with Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and the pending Romeo Lavia, have it absolutely all in the midfield now and it’s a super moment and a super feeling for us Blues fans.
Enzo single-handedly carried our midfield and our team last season when we had an atrocious year of football, but now he finally has the help that he needs and deserves.
Caicedo and Lavia will provide the defensive stability and awareness that we have needed and lacked for so long, as well as athleticism and physicality. Both players know how to defend, close gaps, intercept, and put a tackle in – all things we have badly missed.
Then ahead of them Enzo will be free to go and do what he is very good at and that is create and shoot. Enzo actually has a very good shot on him and knows how to find the net, but he was so pinned back last season we never saw it. He also has great vision and an eye for a pass, and now he will have the freedom to do all of that.
It’s literally a dream come true for Chelsea fans and it does still very much feel like that, a big dream! But it’s not a dream, Chelsea now have a VERY good and suitable midfield with the perfect complimentary profiles to each other. What a future they have, and they’re all young so it’s a future that we should see thrive, get better, and have for many years to come!
