Ajla Tomljanovic has the early break!
You can’t say it isn’t well-deserved, with the Aussie playing the better tennis through the first three games of this one.
Her power has been on display early but she’s also been excellent with her court coverage, as shown in one particular point in that game where she managed to hit a “phenomenal” lob to set up a break point.
She does it again the very next point and is in the driver’s seat early on.
“As soon as she’s got the opening she’s going down the line,” Jelena Dokic notes on Nine’s coverage.
“She’s just so technically sound. Keeps it simple, short backswing, great balance. That will send a message to Rybakina.
“She’s been sharp very early on from the first point. She’s got that good balance of being aggressive but not over-playing.”
“She’s come ready to play. Awesome start for the Aussie,” Sam Groth adds.
