CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hannah Hicks was almost in disbelief when he received the news that she had been named an NJCAA Division II Third Team All-American by the NJCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Committee.
“Wow, I’m an All-American,” Hicks said. “I just want to thank God and those who have helped me along the way.”
A Cleveland native, Hicks has had a decorated second season with the Jayhawks by being named the Region 3 Player of the Year, Region 3 First Team; a Region 3 All-Tournament team member; and a Region 3 Player of the Week for her performance from November 29 through Dec. 5.
Hicks started in all 28 games she played in, averaging 14.2 points per game and led the country in rebounds per game with 15.6. Hicks also averaged 2.9 blocks per game which ranked fourth in the country. The second-year forward eclipsed the 100-block mark during the season.
Highlighting her season was a Dec. 1 game against Butler County CC when she scored a season-high 24 points while grabbing a career-high 30 rebounds. Hicks scored 20 or more points in five games as well as grabbing 20 or more rebounds in five games. Hicks also tied a career-high with eight blocks at Butler County CC.
On the year, Hicks recorded 18 double-doubles, including a double-double in the final nine games. During that span, Hicks and the Jayhawks played against three nationally ranked teams where she excelled against the stiffer competition.
“Hannah Hicks being named All-American is richly deserved,” said head coach Dave Turnbull. “She brought her A-game every night. She’s a great player, a great teammate, and it is my honor to have had the opportunity to coach her this past season.”
