American Airlines is about to open a hotel — but you won’t be able to book a room there

A much-anticipated 600-room hotel will open its doors in Fort Worth, Texas, early next year — and it serves a very special purpose.

The hotel is owned by American Airlines and is located on the carrier’s massive headquarters campus, which is named for the airline’s legendary former CEO, Robert Crandall.

But before going into details (in typical TPG fashion) about whether you can earn or redeem AAdvantage miles at this hotel, or whether they count as Loyalty Points, there’s a bit of a catch: it’s not open to the public.

American is building the facility, known as Skyview 6, to house employees who visit its campus and are there for meetings or training – think the regular training that pilots and flight attendants must go through to keep their qualifications current. And, from the looks of the renderings that American released on Wednesday, these employees have a lot to look forward to.

In addition to the 600 guest rooms, all floors of the Skyview 6 hotel feature a lounge area that the airline intends to be used for studying.

The facility comes with new dining options as well: A dining room will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. In addition, a social space called “the tavern” will be open in the evening for “games, light bites and drinks,” the airline said.

And, to burn off all the calories from the dining room and the tavern, Skyview 6 will include a 73,000-square-foot fitness center that includes an exercise pool. Outdoor basketball, tennis, pickleball and volleyball courts are also being built.

These new facilities will be open to all employees — not just those staying at the hotel.

Finally, Skyview 6 will feature a 10,000-square-foot ballroom for large gatherings, including State of the Airline, an all-hands meeting led by CEO Robert Isom and his executive team.

Skyview 6 is the latest part of the Crandall Campus to open — an ongoing project that began opening at the end of the 2010s. The campus, which also includes the airline’s operations center and its C.R. Smith Museum, was formally dedicated last fall — with Crandall himself in attendance. In 2019, TPG founder Brian Kelly toured Skyview 8, a building that features unique AvGeek-inspired art, and was in awe at what he saw.
