Amex’s Seattle Centurion Lounge is closing to prep for upcoming debut of bigger, better space

There’s some exciting news on the horizon for travelers passing through Seattle.

After a short delay, American Express is gearing up to open a massive, brand-new Centurion Lounge at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) in the coming weeks. As part of the transition, the issuer is closing its existing location in Seattle starting on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. local time.

The company shared the news in a statement that will be posted on the Centurion Lounge website.

As we get ready to open the new Centurion Lounge at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, the current Centurion Lounge located in Concourse B will close at 7:00 p.m. on January 29 so we can complete the lounge relocation and construction. We look forward to welcoming eligible Card Members to our new lounge on the mezzanine level of the Central Terminal in the coming weeks. Though there’ll be a short period with no Amex lounge in Seattle, most flyers should be looking forward to the new space.

The existing Seattle Centurion Lounge is one of the smallest in the entire network. It first opened as a “Centurion Studio,” and it quickly outgrew its tiny footprint. Amex worked to add more space back in 2017, but the issuer’s Pacific Northwest flagship still remained overcrowded, even during the demand downturn associated with the pandemic.

Now that travel is back in full swing, the Seattle outpost has been busier than ever, operating with a waitlist during peak travel times.

The good news is that help is on the way. First announced back in February 2021, Amex is building a brand-new club on the mezzanine level of the Central Terminal. The best part? At more than 13,800 square feet, this new space will triple in size.

Amex also announced on Monday that it’ll partner with Chef Kristi Brown, a James Beard Award semifinalist and owner of Seattle-based Communion, to develop the menus for the new Seattle location. At launch, the menu will include “Seattle Soul” food, including tuna croquettes with remoulade, peach cobbler French toast and blackened chicken cobb salad.

Other amenities at the new lounge include improved airfield and Olympic Mountain views, added restrooms, phone booths, cozy nooks and more. While the current lounge lacks even the most basic amenities like plentiful and clean restrooms, the new space should bring the offerings up to par with the rest of the Centurion Lounge network.

While Amex first promised to open the new Seattle outpost by the end of 2022, it quietly delayed the debut by a few months to finish some last-minute punch-list items. Amex isn’t ready to provide a firm opening date for its new Seattle space, but it’s expected to open in the next few weeks.
