The 26th MOBO Awards ceremony was held at Sheffield’s Utility Arena and featured comedian, actor, and podcaster Babatunde Aleshe as well as Love Island star Indiyah Polack as presenters. The purpose of the event was to honor black music in the UK and globally.
Additionally, Soul II Soul, Sugababes, and Ghetts received special achievement awards during the program.
Raye defeated rivals including Little Simz, who led the joint nominations, and PinkPantheress, the previous winner, to win the MOBO for best female, just after it was revealed that she was the most nominated artist ever for the Brit Awards this year.
After receiving four nominations prior of the ceremony, Stormzy and Little Simz tied for first place, but Central Cee emerged victorious over J Hus and Dave. Additionally, Central Cee was awarded song of the year for his work with Dave on Sprinter.
The Mercury Prize winners Ezra Collective, J Hus, Little Simz, Raye, and Stormzy all had records that were nominated for albums of the year, but Potter Payper’s Real Back In Style won out.
Mel Made Me Do It was named video of the year, and Stormzy win one prize.
Rapper Tunde was awarded the best new comer trophy, and other performers that won accolades in the genre categories were Sault, Little Simz, Bugzy Malone, Asake, K-Trap, and Ezra Collective.
Drake and 21 Savage were the best international act.
Preliminarily announced, Ghetts was recognized as a pioneer, Soul II Soul received a lifetime achievement award, and Sugababes were acknowledged for their contribution to music.
A MOBOs “paving the way” award was given to retired Olympic heptathlete Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill in honor of her charity and sporting accomplishments.
A thrilling performance of their hit songs “Terminator” and “Sugarcane” by Ghanaian afrobeats artists King Promise and Camidoh were another major highlight of the MOBO Awards show, as they greatly enthralled the crowd.
Love Island star Indiyah Polack and comedian, actress, and podcaster Babatunde Aleshe hosted the MOBO Awards, which were aired live on YouTube from the Utility Arena in Sheffield.
