For the month of December, Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund (ASPSF) is recognizing not one but two outstanding volunteers in the Southeast Region!
Congratulations to Brian Wells and Aaron Simpson, both of Monticello, as ASPSF’s December 2022 Volunteers of the Month.
Program Manager Kerron Simpson described Brian and Aaron, who are her brothers, as behind-the-scenes volunteers who were raised in a single parent home. They passionately believe in empowering single parents to pursue their education, increase their income, and raise their standard of living.
When the NAACP had a Black History Month parade, Brian Wells secured a side-by-side and attached ASPSF signs to it. He drove it in the parade while Program Manager Kerron Simpson threw candy and greeted the community members present.
Called “a champion of ASPSF,” Brian is a volunteer Kerron can always count on. He retired after 33 years with the Arkansas Department of Transportation but stays active by keeping Kerron up to date on community activities. He even secured (and drove!) a side-by-side so ASPSF could have a vehicle for the NAACP’s Black History Month parade.
“I can always call on Brian to assist me,” Kerron said. “He is always willing to accompany me as a driver through my very rural region. We were even caught in the snow while driving at night from Chicot County!”
Aaron Simpson helps Program Manager Kerron Simpson distribute checks during a drive-thru award pickup event.
Aaron, meanwhile, is Kerron’s co-pilot, doing whatever he can to serve the community. He helps by distributing scholarship checks and accompanying Kerron as she travels to visit students and supporters in Drew, Jefferson, and Arkansas counties.
Through his work as a resident specialist at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, Aaron has helped ASPSF establish a relationship with the school and its students. Aaron is also employed at the Saracen Casino Resort as a security guard supervisor.
“He always has my back,” Kerron said. “His focus is always about helping single parents.”
