What is an Athlete’s foot?
Athlete’s foot, a fungal infection, is a common skin condition that often affects between the toes or the whole feet, depending on severity. It thrives in warm, moist environments, particularly during the rainy season, making it prevalent among athletes and those who wear tight-fitting shoes for a long period of time. While it’s not life-threatening, it can be itchy, uncomfortable, and quite contagious.

Symptoms
Athlete’s Foot typically occurs as a burning sensation. After a day or two, it turns reddish causing itchiness that is accompanied with scaly flakes. As the infection progresses, it can spread to the soles and tops of the feet. Blisters and peeling skin may also develop.
Preventing Athlete’s foot
Athlete’s foot is a bit uncomfortable when you look at it or even contract it, but it can be prevented. Below are preventive measures for athlete’s foot:
Keep your feet dry: Foot hygiene is important. Also, moisture is a breeding ground for any fungi. So, the magic is to always dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, after showering or swimming or when you’re exposed to moisture.

Wear breathable footwear: Another preventive measure for athlete’s foot is to wear footwear. Go for shoes made from breathable materials such as leather or canvas. Avoid tight-fitting shoes that trap moisture.
Put on dry socks during wet seasons: Wet socks provide an ideal environment for fungus growth. Change your socks and that of your kids at least once a day, and more often if your feet sweat excessively.
Avoid wash and wear: Allow your shoes to dry completely between wears to prevent the buildup of bacteria and fungi.
Avoid bare feet in public areas: Public showers and swimming pools are common areas where an athlete’s foot can spread. Wear flip-flops or shower shoes in these environments to avoid contraction..
Treat your cuts and bruises: Keep any cuts or abrasions on your feet clean and covered to prevent fungal infections.
