Atlanta’s annual Music Midtown festival — which would have featured artists including Fall Out Boy and Future — will no longer take place this September, a decision made in connection with Georgia being more accepting of guns in public parks.
The update was announced Monday via the two-day fest’s official Twitter account.
“Hey Midtown fans — due to circumstances beyond our control, Music Midtown will no longer be taking place this year,” the account tweeted.
Though this year’s event — which dates back to 1994 and in the past has featured the likes of Elton John, Miley Cyrus, Common and Billie Eilish and more — was axed, the fest expressed hope for future iterations.
“We were looking forward to reuniting in September and hope we can all get back to enjoying the festival together again soon.”
Georgia residents are legally permitted to carry guns in public places like Piedmont Park, which would have hosted the fest, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Though the event generally bans weapons, this week’s decision follows an appellate court ruling this year that upheld a 2019 ruling by the Supreme Court which made it harder for firearms to be restricted from short-lived private events that are hosted on public land, according to the outlet.
“Public policy has real impacts and, in this case, economic and social implications on a greta tradition,” Atalanta City Council President Doug Shipman tweeted in reaction to Monday’s news.
