Alex de Minaur cut a dejected figure in his post-match press conference, admitting to feeling deflated after Carlos Alcaraz ended his Australian Open run in a 7-5, 6-2, 6-1 domination.
And Alcaraz later lifted the lid on why he and Jannik Sinner hold a 19-0 win record against the top Aussie player, which may just be a gut punch to de Minaur as he digests yet another quarter-final loss.
De Minaur is arguably the third best men’s player on the planet at the moment but he looked a class below Alcaraz, the world No.1, despite putting up plenty of fight on Tuesday night.

The Aussie’s performance may have been good enough to beat any other player in the top 10.
Alcaraz was asked post-match how he dominated a player who had done the same to the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Alexander Bublik on his run to the quarters.

“I mean, to be honest, I just feel what he’s trying to do against me or when he’s facing against a top player, we all know his level, his style,” Alcaraz told reporters.
“He’s really fast, he doesn’t miss that often. You know, it’s just sometimes really difficult, because his speed and when he gets the ball, it’s really soon, and he doesn’t let you have time in the match.
“When he’s trying to play or when he’s playing against the best or the top player, he’s trying to be more aggressive, which sometimes he’s just out of his, you know, comfort zone.
“Sometimes we’re seeing him miss quite often in some, you know, quite easy balls, let’s say. I notice that, and we know how to approach the match, because let’s say we are, like, one step forward in that case.”
Alcaraz had never reached the semi-finals of the AO prior to this match but has now booked a blockbuster clash against last year’s finalist Alexander Zverev.

Post-match, de Minaur was asked how he felt in the context of the vast improvement he’d made compared to past tournaments.

The Spaniard finished with 32 unforced errors to de Minaur’s 29. Alcaraz had four more aces than de Minaur but three more double faults too.
Winners was his big difference, hitting 26 against the Aussie’s 16.
“Alex de Minaur was playing the best tennis of his career here yet he had no way of feeling comfortable in consecutive points,” Woodbridge said post-match.
“He’d play a brilliant point and then had to bounce back and do it again.”
During his press conference, de Minaur was asked if he’d do his preparation differently having played at the United Cup and an exhibition match against Alcaraz.
His response could be mistaken as frosty, but more simply looked like a man out of answers.
“I don’t know. What could I do differently? You tell me,” he replied.
