German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has travelled to Tel Aviv for the second time since the attacks on Israel began in a bid to help find a diplomatic solution to the crisis. “The terror of Hamas must be fought, otherwise there will be no peace and no security – neither for Israel nor for the Palestinians.” Now that Gaza has been sealed off, on the other hand, the great suffering of the civilian population there not only risks creating a breeding ground for new terrorism but also endangers the steps that have been achieved so far towards rapprochement with the Arab neighbours, she added. According to Baerbock, the escalation must not be allowed to result in a broader “conflagration” in the Middle East.
The German foreign minister also visited Lebanon during her tour of the Middle East. In the capital Beirut, she held talks with the country’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and caretaker Foreign Minister Bou Habib, among others. On Saturday, Baerbock will be taking part in the Cairo Summit for Peace in Egypt.
