Kyiv (dpa) – To support Ukraine, Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and the foreign ministers of the EU states have travelled to Kyiv today (Monday) for a historic meeting. Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs, said that this was the first time that such a meeting of the representatives of all 27 EU states was taking place outside the EU. The current situation in view of Russia’s war of aggression and the EU’s support for Ukraine are to be discussed at the meeting. For Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, this is the second visit to Ukraine in a matter of weeks. Baerbock had last visited Ukraine on 11 September.
In advance, Borrell had suggested that one topic for the EU meeting should be making longer-term financial pledges for military aid to Ukraine and also supporting the supply of modern fighter jets and missiles with EU funds. The prospects of Ukraine joining the EU are also likely to be discussed at the meeting. Ukraine has been an official candidate country since June 2022. The 27 EU states have yet to unanimously agree to commence negotiations, however.
