New York (dpa) – Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called upon the states of the world to make the United Nations ready for the future with far-reaching reforms. “Since 1945, the United Nations has acted as an engine of progress and peace,” Baerbock said at a preparatory meeting for the UN Summit of the Future scheduled to take place in September 2024. However, she said that it is evident that the UN needs “an upgrade” in order to continue fulfilling its mission for future generations.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the Summit of the Future as a unique opportunity to bring outdated multilateral institutions into line with today’s world. Germany is preparing the Summit of the Future together with Namibia.
Baerbock emphasised the importance of international cooperation: “No single country in the world can respond to the major issues of our time alone.” Initially, it is a question of the climate crisis, inequality, digital governance and women’s rights, she added. “At the Summit of the Future next year, we have the chance to move ahead on these issues.” In addition, the United Nations and the international institutions need to be reformed, the foreign minister demanded. “We need institutions that reflect today’s reality – so that we can shape today’s reality.”
