Berlin (dpa) – After days of fighting in Sudan, Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called for an immediate ceasefire for the country in the north-east of Africa. “Our message to Generals Burhan and Hemeti is clear: the violence in Sudan must stop”, Baerbock wrote on Twitter. She stressed the need for a ceasefire, “so that people can get to safety and NGOs can provide the aid which is so urgently needed.”
Since Saturday, Sudan’s two most powerful Generals and their forces have been fighting for dominance. The two men have led the country and its 46 million people since a joint military coup in 2021. The de facto president Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is supreme commander of the army, is fighting his deputy, Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, known as Hemeti, who leads the powerful Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
