Berlin (dpa) – On her third trip to the Middle East since the Hamas attacks on Israel, Germany’s Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock will visit the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Israel. She has appealed for continued work towards a two-state solution. “It is only by remembering the promise of a life side by side – in two states – that Israelis and Palestinians alike can live in peace, security and dignity,” Baerbock said. “During this almost irreconcilable rift, it is vital not that we do not lose sight of the bigger picture.”
Baerbock warned against a breakdown of a historic opportunity for peace between Israel and its Arab neighbours, “As that is exactly what the terrorists are trying to achieve,” she said.On the subject of efforts to achieve the release of hostages, ensure humanitarian aid can reach Gaza, and prevent violence spreading across the region, Baerbock stressed that the only “prospect of success was if we pull together with Arab states in the Gulf.”
At the same time, Germany’s foreign minister reassured Israel of Germany’s unwavering support in defending itself against Hamas terrorism. “We stand shoulder to shoulder with democracies,” Baerbock said, while also emphasising that Israel must of course do everything in its power to protect civilians. “The prospect of humanitarian ceasefires is vital to this,” Baerbock added. She also called for urgent supplies of essential aid including water, food and medication to people in Gaza “to ease their suffering somewhat.” The Minister started her visit with talks in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia before travelling on to Israel.
