Berlin (dpa) – On the first anniversary of the death of the Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini, Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has promised the people of Iran further support against oppression. “Although the protests are no longer in the headlines, we will not abandon the people in Iran,” Baerbock promised on the first anniversary of the death of the Iranian Kurd Amini on 16 September. The minister added: “We are putting their fate on the agenda – in Brussels, New York and Geneva.”
Amini’s death in the autumn of 2022 had sparked the most serious protests in Iran for decades; having started in the Kurdish regions, they spread across the country. Baerbock explained that Germany, together with its EU partners, was invoking sanctions on “those who continue to trample on people’s rights and dignity in Iran”. Germany, she went on, had made sure that the United Nations would investigate these human rights violations so that these cases would be documented and those responsible held to account. “As heart-breaking as this may sound, we will not be able to change conditions in Iran from the outside. Nevertheless, we will not stop giving people there a voice”, stated the foreign minister.
