Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo said the franchise needs to escape the play-in tournament after a 124-117 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers dropped Miami to 31-29 and eighth in the Eastern Conference. “I don’t wanna be in this s*** no more,” Adebayo said. “We’re better than being in the play-in in the last 4 years.”
Adebayo recorded 29 points and 14 rebounds in the loss to Philadelphia. He has averaged 20.1 points and 10.0 rebounds in February, but the Heat went 5-5 during the month. Miami has been in the play-in tournament in each of the past three seasons — advancing to the NBA Finals in 2023 before earlier playoff exits in 2024 and 2025 — and currently sits in position for a fourth consecutive appearance.
Adebayo producing at All-Star level while Heat remain stuck in eighth place
Adebayo’s individual production has not been the issue. His scoring, rebounding, and defensive presence — the Heat rank sixth in the league defensively — have been consistent throughout the season. The gap between his performance and the team’s record reflects the broader roster challenges Miami has faced, including significant missed time from Tyler Herro and the inconsistency that has defined the Heat’s season.
The frustration in Adebayo’s comments stems from the pattern rather than a single loss. Four consecutive years of play-in positioning despite having the personnel to compete higher in the East has created a cycle the Heat have been unable to break during the regular season, even when they have performed well once the postseason begins.
Heat’s remaining schedule includes matchups against Rockets and Nets that could shift standing
Miami’s path out of the play-in runs through its remaining schedule, which includes games against the Houston Rockets and Brooklyn Nets. The Heat need to string together wins against beatable opponents to climb above the seventh seed and secure a guaranteed playoff spot without the elimination-game risk that the play-in format creates.
The sixth-ranked defense gives Miami a foundation to win close games down the stretch, but the offensive inconsistency and injury absences that produced a 31-29 record through late February have not been resolved. Adebayo’s comments put public pressure on the organization to finish the regular season differently than the previous three — and his production ensures the conversation is about the roster around him rather than his own contribution.
