Big Brother Naija star Pere has caused a stir online after openly stating that South Africa is ahead of Nollywood in every aspect of art and movie production.
According to Pere, Nigerian cinema cannot compete with South African films in terms of quality, structure, or execution. He emphasized that Nollywood should focus on learning and collaborating with the South African film industry if it hopes to improve.
“Nigerian Nollywood could learn and improve. South Africans are simply ahead in every area of movie production,” Pere noted.
His comments have triggered mixed reactions. While some Nigerians agree that Nollywood needs more structure and international-level production quality, others believe Pere’s statement undermines the progress the Nigerian movie industry has made over the years.
Supporters of Nollywood point to the industry’s global reach through Netflix, Prime Video, and other platforms as proof that Nigerian films are already competing on an international stage.
Pere, however, insists that rather than competing, Nollywood should look into partnerships with South African filmmakers to produce more refined, world-class movies. According to him, collaboration could bridge the gap and elevate African cinema as a whole.
