Blackburn Rovers have signed defender, Dominic Hyam from Coventry City for an undisclosed fee.
Hyam has spent the last six seasons at Coventry since he joined from Reading on a free transfer in July 2017, during which he helped the Sky Blues win promotion from League Two then League One in 2017-18 and 2019-20 seasons respectively.
The 26 year-old defender eventually scored nine goals in 192 appearances for Coventry as they established themselves in the Sky Bet Championship, claiming mid-table finishes of 16th then 12th position in the last two seasons.
Blackburn’s Director of Football, Gregg Broughton revealed that this transfer was weeks in the making, having received “a clear message” in July that Hyam wasn’t for sale but opted to wait for Coventry’s stance to change and acted immediately to bring him to Ewood Park.
Explaining why the club had swooped for Hyam, Broughton described the defender as “amongst the best central defenders in the Championship,” as he added: that Hyam’s passing, one-versus-one defensive duel and leadership abilities made him the ideal “integral” signing for Rovers.
Speaking to RoversTV about his move, Hyam said that he is “happy” and “delighted” to make the switch, having described the opportunity as “flattering” after he first heard of their interest in signing him which prompted him to recall many memories of watching Blackburn as a child.
Reflecting on what it meant to be playing for Blackburn now, Hyam commented: “It’s a huge club and it’s a really good opportunity for me. It’s a short career, every player has opportunities and this was one that I couldn’t really turn down.
Coventry meanwhile issued the following statement on Hyam’s departure: “Everyone at Coventry City would like to wish Dom the best of luck for the future, and thank him for his contribution to the Club over the years.”
Hyam could make his club debut for Blackburn away at Blackpool on Wednesday 31 August in the Sky Bet Championship, and first face his former team – Coventry in the midweek of 1-2 November away at Coventry Building Society Arena.
