Brentford have activated an one-year contract extension to keep midfielder, Sergi Canos at the club until June 2024.
Canos first joined Brentford on loan from Liverpool in 2015-16 season, before returning on a permanent transfer in January 2017 from which he has gone on to score 36 goals in 249 appearances across both spells.
Injury however limited him to just six first-team appearances this season, which led Canos to join Greek Super League’s Olympiacos on loan for the second half of this season where he netted four goals and created three assists in eight appearances.
His performances consequently impressed Brentford officials enough to extend his contract until 30 June 2024, with Canos having initially looked set to depart on 30 June 2023 once his contract expired prior to the club’s activation of the one-year extension.
“Last season was difficult for Sergi. His start to the season was delayed by injury and he didn’t feel he made enough appearances for us,” commented Head Coach, Thomas Frank on the decision to retain Canos for one more season.
Frank however iterated that Canos’ fitness will be key to earning a new contract beyond next season, as he added: “In the second half of the season, he started to find form at Olympiacos but then was hit by injury again.
“Therefore, this summer, we need to get Sergi fit, back to his best, and making a big contribution for us.”
Frank also acknowledged Canos’ status at the club alongside two outgoing players in Pontus Jansson and Saman Ghoddos, as he concluded: “Like Pontus Jansson and Saman Ghoddos, Sergi is already a Brentford legend and I’m looking forward to having him back in pre-season.”
Confirmation of Canos’ contract extension also comes just 24 hours after the club signed goalkeeper, Mark Flekken from SC Freiburg amidst speculation over David Raya’s future at the club.
