The ties that bind have extended to a new generation. Sam Springsteen, quite likely the only Jersey City firefighter with both parents in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, welcomed a baby girl with his partner this week. He is the youngest of Bruce Springsteen and Patty Scialfa’s kids, and the first to transform the Grammy, Oscar, Tony, Oscar, and Golden Globe-winner from The Boss into The Gramps.
“Walking the baby,” Scialfa, backing singer and guitarist for the E Street Band (and recording artist in her own right) wrote as she uploaded two images to Instagram. The first is a black and white shot of the new parents (likely strolling through New Jersey horse country in Colts Neck), and the second is a shot of young Lily Harper Springsteen herself. (Look at those little bear mittens!)
Plenty of Springsteen and Scialfa’s notable pals were quick to offer congrats. Among them were Rage Against The Machine/Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello (who has sat in with Bruce a few times), Jill Vedder (wife of Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder), and model Christie Turlington.
“That is some big time good news Grandma,” wrote Amy Aiello Lofgren, wife of E Street Band guitarist Nils Lofgren.
Sam Springsteen, 28, graduated from the Monmouth County Fire Academy in 2014. Before his current stint in Jersey City, he served in Colts Neck, Long Branch (where his old man was living when he wrote “Born to Run”), and North Wildwood, a beach community that can safely be called “heavy Springsteen country.” Not much is known about his partner, but here’s another nice pic of the two youngsters from Patti’s Instagram (and you can also check out the engagement ring.)
In addition to a cool rockin’ grandma, the baby girl has a grandpa with a Presidential Medal of Freedom, Kennedy Center Honor, over 135 million records sold, and his own Broadway show. The newborn also has a music programmer/producer uncle, Evan Springsteen, and an Olympic medalist aunt, Jessica Springsteen.
Last summer in Tokyo, Jessica rode the Belgian Warmblood stallion Don Juan van de Dankhoeve to a silver medal in show jumping with Team USA.
With Bruce’s hit show Springsteen on Broadway (in which Patti usually appeared) now concluded, the new grandparents will soon start gearing up for a massive world tour with the E Street Band. The show kicks off in Tampa on February 1, 2023, and concludes in Monza, Italy on July 25. Good luck getting tickets to the Madison Square Garden show on April 1, but know that a second North American leg will soon be announced for August.
Here are three live clips of E Street at work, to inspire you to start saving up now.
