Butere Girls in Western Kenya is one of the premier high schools in the region, which natured some of Kenya’s best women leaders.

The alumnae have scored many firsts in Kenya, forever etching their names in history books. Kenya’s First Lady, Rachel Ruto, is a product of the school’s motto, Only The Best.
Butere Girls was founded in 1916 by missionaries and offered lessons, including writing and sewing.

The school subsequently became a national institution, attracting students from far and wide.
A former student at the institution told TUKO.co.ke that despite their proximity to Butere Boys, they were uninterested in mingling with them.
“Butere Boys students were the last people we associated with. We were on different levels performance wise as a national school while they were just a local school.”
The school was named among the most preferred by KCPE candidates in 2022, with 98,410 applications.
The institution boasts a huge piece of land, and getting from the gate to the social hall is quite a journey. There is also a forest in the institution, and students regularly get visits from monkeys.
Some of the immortals who attended the intuition include the first Kenyan judge at The Hague, Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch, and Kenya’s first female High Court judge Lady Justice Effie Owuor.

Makini schools founder Mary Okello, Kenya’s first female bank manager and flamboyant late ambassador Orie Rogo Manduli attended the school.
The first woman MP from Western Kenya, Prof Julia Ojiambo, and the first woman chief inspector of schools and director of education, Prof Norah Olembo, also studied at Butere Girls.
Rachel Ruto wears Butere Girls uniform
The first lady is proud of her former school, which she visited on numerous occasions and even wore a school uniform, to the delight of students.
She also visited the school for mentorship with her husband and even paid fees for a needy student through the alumnae association.
In one of her last visits, Rachel shared images of speaking at a fundraising dinner aimed to support a programme at the school.
