CAF have released a statement to declare Morocco as AFCON 2025 champions, meanging Senegal lost their AFCON crown after it was ruled the Teranga Lions forfeited the final by walking off before full-time.
The appeal board awarded the Atlas Lions a 3-0 victory.
SENEGAL’S AFCON 2025 CROWN STRIPPED AND HANDED TO MOROCCO
Senegal’s reign as AFCON champions came to an abrupt end on Tuesday after CAF’s appeal board ruled that they had forfeited the final.
The decision followed an incident where Senegalese players walked off the pitch before the match was completed.
CAF’s appeal board has ruled that Senegal forfeited the AFCON final, overturning their extra-time 1-0 win into a 3-0 default victory for hosts Morocco.
The chaos unfolded in Rabat on January 18, when Senegal players walked off in protest during stoppage time for about 15 minutes, while fans attempted to invade the pitch after Morocco were awarded a penalty.
When play eventually resumed, Brahim Diaz saw his spot-kick saved, and Senegal went on to score the decisive goal in extra time.
CAF had initially fined both teams and handed out bans to players and officials but allowed the result to stand. That has now changed, with Morocco officially crowned champions—though the matter could still head to the Court of Arbitration for Sport for a final appeal.
CAF STATEMENT
“The CAF Appeal Board decided that in application of Article 84 of the Regulations of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the Final Match of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 (“the Match”), with the result of the Match being recorded as 3–0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF),” the Federation announced.
