Capella Sydney is finally open to the public after undergoing seven years of renovation and restoration. The hotel, which takes up an entire city block and welcomes guests to a benchmark destination of luxury accommodation, exquisite cuisine, and unrivalled cultural immersion, is located in the heart of the city, only minutes from Circular Quay, the Opera House, and the Harbour Bridge.
The Department of Education building, where Capella Sydney is located, was built in the beginning of the 20th century. It was designed by New South Wales (NSW) government architect George McRae. Property giant Pontiac Land restored and reimagined this structure located in the city’s famed Sandstone Precinct.
Pontiac Land Group CEO David Tsang remarked that the company has always been enthusiastic about fostering local communities through the construction of noteworthy projects. With the opening of Capella Sydney, the company is able to give the public access to this historically and aesthetically significant building in the middle of Sydney’s central business district, transforming it into a world-class luxury hotel.
Epitome of Luxury
The nine-story Capella Sydney features 192 elegantly furnished rooms and apartments. The rooms and suites expresses the height of luxury, with amenities such as Italian Frette linens, deep soaking tubs, and plush terrycloth bathrobes. A custom pantone and a bespoke range of vegan, sustainable in-room amenities created in collaboration with Haeckels set this hotel apart.
Guests will have access to the hotel’s private world of luxury and cultural connection. On the sixth floor, visitors can relax and rejuvenate with treatments at Auriga Spa or a dip in the 20-metre heated indoor pool, providing the best in urban wellness.
The Living Room, a staple of all Capella hotels, is a cozy refuge on the ground floor for overnight guests. Culturists, who are on hand to influence the hotel’s guests’ experiences from before they arrive until after they leave, also use this space to develop the ideas behind the hotel’s cultural and experiential programming.
A two-hour long storytelling journey through the past add to a unique experience. Visitors who take the walking tour from the hotel to the laneways of The Rocks will hear intriguing anecdotes about the former Department of Education building, now Capella Sydney, the Sandstone Precinct in which it stands, and the culture, crime, and convicts that shaped the city’s history.
DRIFT artwork
Visitors enter the hotel through the Farrer Place lobby, where a collection of purchased and specially commissioned works of art elevates the first impression. Australian artists Judy Watson, Otis Hope Carey, Elise Cakebread, and Georgia Bisley are just some of the names you’ll recognise in the ground floor collection, which culminates in a massive robotic lighting display by Dutch art team DRIFT.
The hotel’s main lobby features a suspended artwork by DRIFT titled Meadow. Once the building’s courtyard, the space now known as Aperture serves as the hotel’s central hub, providing access to all of its facilities. Also included are the McRae Bar and the historic Brasserie 1930, both serve dishes created in tandem with The Bentley Group.
In honour of the grand opening, Capella Sydney is a package that includes the Capella History Trip for A$1500. This will be good for two people to stay in a deluxe guest room and participate in a variety of activities throughout the day.
