A selection of work by New York-based illustrator Chalzea Xu. Specializing in cover, editorial, and book illustrations, Xu creates with watercolor and mixed media, often transforming her work into animated illustrations. Recent projects have explored themes such as fantasy, history, mental health, the queer community, and feminism. She is passionate about depicting people, animals, plants, and enjoys the subtle interplay of colour and light. Xu draws much of her inspiration from aspects of her own life — love of nature and family. After battling mental illness for ten years, she works to heal herself through her art. She also draws inspiration from classic films, TV shows, and music.
“Painting is as essential to me as breathing. I sincerely hope that my work can be seen by more people and that it can help others in some way–that has always been my dream.”
