Chanel Iman and her daughters, Cali Clay and Cassie Snow, celebrated the debut of American Girl’s Claudie Wells last week. The celebrity mom and her kids attended the premiere together.
“Thank you @americangirlbrand for inviting us to your fun event last night,” Chanel shared after the American Girl event last Tuesday (Aug. 23). “My girls love your dolls,” the model wrote to the brand. “Thank you for celebrating with us,” American Girl wrote in the comments section of Chanel’s post.
“These girls are just angels,” another social media follower noted after seeing the pictures of Chanel Iman with Cali Clay and Cassie Snow. “You all look so pretty,” another fan shared.
American Girl decided to create the character of Claudie Wells in 2020. The choice came after Bri Bennett posted a tweet requesting the brand debut a Black doll. “Let me write it,” Bennett said in a rather joking manner. Americal Girl took the creator seriously and reached out to let Bri create the character.
Claudie Wells takes on the persona of a girl living in 1920s Harlem. There is a modern element to the doll as her clothes pay tribute to one era without completely leaving the present age.
“As a girl, I always loved studying the Harlem Renaissance, an outpouring of Black artistry that emerged alongside larger struggles for equal rights,” Bennett shared in a statement. “I hope readers will enjoy exploring this fascinating era through Claudie’s eyes,” the creator said.
Claudie’s outfits are certainly based on 1920s Harlem. Her accessories remind the reader that she is living in the modern age.
“When I think of the Harlem Renaissance, I think of glam,” fashion designer Samantha Black shared with Vogue during a recent interview. “Whether people were poor or rich, they showed their creativity through their sense of style,” Black said.
