Nathan Jones has talked about the value that Charlton Athletic’s experienced players add to his group – and not just in terms of their contributions on the pitch.
Summer signing Matty Godden has scored 15 goals this season since making the move from Coventry City.
Asked about if he expected the ex-Sky Blues frontman to have produced that kind of return already, Jones told the South London Press: “Absolutely we expected it. His track record says it. We invested in him on every level – he has a track record of scoring goals. We brought him in to add the firepower and he has.
“But he is so much more than goals, Matty Godden. Matty Godden is a stellar professional and wonderful human being. It is the way he talks and demands from people. He is a joy to be around and does a lot of my job for me.
“That is one bonus of experienced players – provided you get the right ones and we have added the right ones here.
“We have got people like Matty Godden, Luke Berry and Danny Hylton who have been there and done it. They have achieved things and know what it is like to be young, naive and the pressure.
“Matty Godden’s numbers are exactly what we wanted from him. We expected big things but we knew if we signed Matty Godden he normally scores goals.”
