We’ve been seeing all the major outlets and sources continue to mention Chelsea’s name as being a club interested in signing Jude Bellingham, but are we actually serious?
It looks like any club who wants to sign Bellingham simply has to put the £130m fee on the table. We are seeing contrasting reports on it day after day, but I think the fact remains that a lot depends on who is prepared to put that super large fee down.
Are Chelsea interested? I’d probably say yes, we might be. But is he a priority for us this summer? This I cannot see being true, I believe we will have other priorities.
I think the club, or at least some at the club, do like the idea of signing Bellingham. But the reality of the situation is that we need to prioritise other positions and players first, and we also have to sell a lot of our current squad. To me, that suggests that we are not seriously considering Bellingham at this stage, and that would absolutely be the correct decision IF we aren’t.
We keep seeing reports that Chelsea’s priority for the summer is a new goalkeeper, a defensive midfielder, and a striker, as well as selling current players. Bellingham is not any of those, he is a centre midfielder, but not a defensive midfielder.
Chelsea might have to spend big again on one, two, or even three of the aforementioned positions, so thinking we could then go and spend £130m on Bellingham, who is not of the profile of any of those desire positions we are targeting, would be a ludicrous decision and one that I don’t think we will be making personally.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Bellingham is a fantastic player but if anything, he would be a Mateo Kovacic or Mason Mount replacement due to his profile, and not a defensive midfielder. And unless Dortmund lowered their fee, then I cannot see Chelsea going for Bellingham this summer.
